Hotel Puerta Calakmul

I was a bit concerned this would be more rustic than anticipated but it was incredibly nice. Clean updated wonderful cabins that were surprisingly cool with fans in November. Great hot water, decent restaurant and overall a great experience. Totally worth it to get to Calakmul before anyone else to enjoy the site alone. Pool was fine but I just dipped my toes. It is a lot of money for what you get but you are paying for location to Calukmul. Worth it.

This hotel is the only hotel located on the shoe-heels of the scenic, 60-kilometer, access road leading to Calakmul Ruins, and it has good food service, surprisingly well-appointed rooms, with everything you need and nothing you don't... soap, shampoo, comfortable bedding, hot-water showers (albeit with limited hours of between 0600 and 1000 in the morning and 1800 and 2100 at night), signed and maintained birding and nature trails, a small swimming pool (which can be refreshing during the hotter months of May-October), private guarded parking, etc. Great birding and wildlife viewing of both Yucatan Black Howler-Monkeys and Central American Spider Monkeys, etc., which are often vocal and can be seen cavorting in the native trees on the hotel grounds, etc. The management (usually only Spanish-speaking) is friendly and service oriented:-) Pretty fast WiFi is available in the restaurant and its surroundings only but not in the rooms. The only inconvenience is that the hotel doesn't accept credit cards, so bring sufficient cash for your visit... as the nearest ATM machine is over 50-miles to the east along the main highway at a village called Xpujil (aka, Calakmul).

We had been planning our visit to Calakmul with enough time to make the most of it and get the most out of it in the most positive way. Since we were traveling with our children and it is always a good idea to be prepared for everything that can happen in the company of the little ones, the time spent looking for the best accommodation options near the Calakmul archaeological site resulted in this hotel being the best option. We invested time in reading and analyzing the comments about the place and decided to go for it. I contacted the hotel staff to share our plans and wishes. We understood perfectly well what type of hotel this is and its prices (this is where the valuable user's'contributions/comments are very useful) so we were prepared and with the mindset and idea of ​​enjoying the stay to the fullest. The hotel staff (especially Rubi) provided us with a lot of information and answered our questions and concerns. We received information about the road conditions and the construction work in the surroundings of Calakmul and the archaeological site. Thanks to this communication, which was clear and extensive, we were able to arrange and modify our original itinerary to stay an extra night at this hotel and thus be able to calmly travel to Calakmul and visit the archaeological site while there. The hotel staff helped us contact Jacobo, a professional bilingual guide who gave the children a lot of attention and patience during the visit to the archaeological site. The children swam and enjoyed the hotel. The internet is only available in the reception and the restaurant. The dishes we tasted in the restaurant were good enough. As mentioned we were prepared for this place and we were not disappointed. All the hotel workers were very attentive and patient. They helped us with the luggage, informed us correctly and were very patient and friendly with the children. We were able to sleep very well protected by the mosquito nets and enjoyed the quietness of the place and the sounds of nature.

We stayed for 1 night in a three person cabin. Very lovely place. We loved the quiet and peaceful, it was great. Quite pricey, but it was our only treat in expensive hotel during our vacation, so worth it in terms of location. Food was not to our taste, though. A special thanks to staff/management for finding our wallet and going through the inconvenience of transferring the money back to me. Highly appreciated!

Nice hotel in the middle of the jungle. You wake up with all the jungle sounds as the rooms don't have Windows, but gaze. Only challenge is the heat at night. Only ventilators, no airco. The swimming pool then is a great chilling alternative in the morning. Also great as it is located close to the site, however it still is an hour drive at least to get to the archeological site from the entrance.

Given the bad reviews of this place, I was a bit worried! Honestly, if you come prepared (i.e. bring cash because they do not take credit cards), this place is really nice, although a bit overpriced. We arrived early (around noon) because access to Calakmul was closed (only opened from 5am-11am due to constructions along the road). I wish they had told us by email so we could have planned our day better, but they did not. They did let us check in early (normally 3PM), which was nice. We walked along the trails, and watched howler monkeys that were hanging out right by the lodge! The pool was cold and not very clear, so we did not go. The bungalow was very comfortable, clean, both beds had mosquito nets. We had hot water in the evening, and a really nice terrace with comfortable chairs and a hammock. Overall very relaxing. We had dinner at the lodge, prices were reasonable with lots of options. They do add 15% to your bill automatically for tips, which is annoying. We left the hotel at 5:30AM to head to Calakmul, so did not try their breakfast.

Really comfortable stay in the middle of the forest. It is clean and there is a mosquito nett everywhere. The restaurant serves amazing fish dishes. Highly recommended to visit Calakmul!

Nice hotel with rustic cabañas (don't expect a, TV) in the jungle, closest to the archeological zone of Calakmul {still 65km or 1,5hrs to go). Good food, friendly service. The WiFi could be faster though, it has a bad reception and only in public areas. The beds in the cabañas are too short for European sizes, half of the legs will be outside of the bed. The employees start talking very loudly to each other very early in the morning, waking up the guests who want to rest.
